Fish: Shark #: 2 Largest: 7 foot (est)
Location: Glory Hole
Crew: Allan & Ronnie
With all the southerly winds we've been having, it was all green water to the canyon. That was the word I heard from Ross at Bay Park as we planned our trip. So, with that (& a memory about an eddy I saw off Atlantic City) we decided to head south and not east and ended up in the Glory Hole. The water was green and the seas were a bit rough. With the wind from the north, we set up on the north-western tip of the hole and drifted fresh bluefish filets and fresh bluefish chum. For a long time it was quiet, then, as we began to drift up the southern bank we had a bit of action. A few lost nibbles and then a hook up. It turned out to be a small blue shark. We cut the line and removed someone else's circle hook and set her free. An hour later, a repeat with a larger shark that Ronnie had boat side in no time (although he was tired from the big tackle and lack of technique) and for reasons unknown to me, I decided to reach into the water and grabbed the shark by it's nose. The fish was strangely quiet as long as I held it's nose and we were able to cut our and someone else's wire right up to the hook shank and even tried to remove the hook but the barb was caught on that tough skin. We tagged our shark, set her free and headed for home.
One thing Allan pointed out was that as the fish began to bite, the water turned clearer. Maybe a few miles south would have had different results.
