We absolutely Killed 'em!
I had a reports that a friend (The Rain Maker) last week couldn't catch any fluke in Cholera because they couldn't get through the sea bass. With the weather prediction for light and variable winds, I thought what a better way to spend the day. Well, the weather man was wrong. It blew pretty good out of the south so we had to run at 20 knots or less to prevent the 3 to 4 footers from pounding our teeth. But it was worth it. As soon as we got there, I headed for some rubble and we had a bit of action and some lost rigs. The fish were averaging around 12 inches. Just legal. Then, I found this spot with bigger fish, more fish and no rubble. No more lost rigs. Also, we were using mostly squid and killies and then changed to clam and squid and it all broke loose. Multiple hook-up after multiple hook-ups. As many as 5 fish being swung over the gunwales at any given moment with many keepers in the mix. We eventually started keeping only fish over 13 or 14 inches. It was great.
As the day wore on, the wind & current picked up and our last 3 drifts were with 10 ounce sinkers and we still couldn't hold bottom in the 80 foot depths! So we quit early and spent the extra time cleaning fish!
