Date: Saturday May 30, 2004 Fish: Striped Bass, Sea Bass, Fluke
#: a few of each Largest: 4.5 lb sea bass!!!
Location: Rockaway
Crew: surfie (Bert), Mark (neighbor) (Ronnie(active) & John (neighbor) no-shows!)
Well, after a late start due to the no-shows, we were on our way in search of stripers. Another tough day. This time because of NO WIND AT ALL! The drift was almost non-existant. We settled amoung the fleet, and remembering the way the chum didn't work yesterday, the plan was to drift until we saw some chum results. Mostly few fish were being taken on chum and we had 3 decent fish right away on the drift. So, we continued drifting until the little wind stopped completely. Now, while drifting for the bass, Bert caught a few impressive fluke (on the striper bait-whole clam) & then a monster 4.5 lb seabass. So we decided to shoot over to the reef (1/2 mile) and drift a few pieces. We had some results throwing a few of these tasty fish in the cooler but nothing too impressive and TONS of bergals. So we went back to stripers. And beieve it or not, even less wind... Then around 1 or 2 we got a call from The Impetious One who was bailing doormat fluke not to far form Jones inlet. We picked up and shot over. Got there just as the wind picked up to 20+ knots and had to use 8 ounce sinkers. The bite didn't last much longer but we put a few more fluke in the cooler and headed back home.
