Date: Saturday June 4, 2005 Fish: Striped Bass & Blues
#: 2 blues & 2 strippers Largest: 30 pounds
Location: 28 foot of water off the roundhouse
Crew: Dom & Bob
In the morning the fish belonged to the trollers. Normally we'd be one of them but we were intent on getting fish on bait. I had a sweet new lite rod spooled with 15 pound test that I was dying to get a big fish on. We found some bunker but nothing was under them so it was tough seeing them & snagging. After a few hours we had 6 in the boat and began fishing. We started with chunks form a dead bunker & I scored the first and largest bass of the day on that great light rod! The fish gave a great fight. Shortly afterwards I landed a nice bluefish on the snagging rig while trying to reel in a bunker. Then it was the odd bunker school and a runnoff from time to time. Until 3pm. At 3 pm we began to have some great fishing. I found it almost impossible to bring in any fresh bunker without a bass hitting. Then after a blue bit my bunker in half another bass struck and it was the fight of my life. After about 15 minutes this MONSTER bass was boatside but before the net could be slipped under him he spit the hook and was gone in an instant. We estimate the fish to be conservatively around 35-40 pounds. At 4:30 Dom boated a fine 36" fish and we headed in leaving them biting.
