The Freeport Hudson Anglers Shark Tournament
Tommy & his brothers showed around 4:20 (20 minutes late), then after another 40 minutes of prepping and rigging we began the long ride to the
official start point (man do I hate that ride). Around 6:10 we get our acknowledgment on the radio and it's full steam ahead. By 8:30 I am searching for
the perfect spot. There are only three other boats in view. I want distance between us and a drift that will take me over the most interesting bottom
features. The surrounding area is around 160 feet deep. The hole drops to 275 feet in a steep drop-off. I'd like to get on the upwind side of the hole and
drift into it. We set up, drop in a chum and a baited hook. I find 2 thermoclines at 100 & 50 feet. Tommy begins to count out 100 feet of line for that first
rod when half way down the bait gets mauled by a shark!!! It was like that the rest of the day! We wanted 4 lines out, one at 100, one at 60 and one at
35 feet. The last one would be weighted with 20 ounces of lead and be around 50 feet off the bottom. But we never got more than 3 rods out and often
it was just one. The sharks just kept coming and coming. Often 2 and 3 at a time. One decided to pass our bait and ate my chum bag! We later caught
him too! All the sharks were blue sharks ranging from 7 foot to over 11. The largest one we killed and it weighed 170 pounds. We had thought it might
push 200. No prize for this fish, but it was fun. We tagged 6 of the over 12 sharks we had and had a long interview with the NMFS biologists who
seemed very interested in our day.
