We were breaking the inlet by 6am with only 30 miles to go we had high hopes that we'd get some serious fishing in before the predicted thunder storms hit. We had some GPS issues and there was a nasty chop coming in on the bow. Eventually we arrived. 2 boats were already there but they were about a mile away. We actually brought little bait as we expected to get some bluefish. Also, Ronnie had filled 4 5 gallon buckets to the brim with peanut bunker the night before to add to the chum. We set up and waited... and waited... and waited... (while ROnnie chopped up peanut bunker and chummed).
Around 10 am we got our first fish. A bluefish. BAIT! We filleted him and threw it on the hook he just cleaned. Allan then began fishing for the blues. Only 1 run off and again nothing... Around 11:00 we just missed a second bluefish who spit the hook at the boat. This fish reduced a huge bluefish fillet to a scrap but we were lazy and had little else for bait so we put it back out. Around 20 minutes later that rod, the short rod, began to bounce. I was thinking bluefish when Tommy, after setting the hook began to shout "this is a fish". We saw it was a thresher and everyone got into action. At one point the fish got tangled in the wire and ended up badly tail-wrapped and inable to swim. We were then winching up 150 pounds of dead weight on 50 pound test! Eventually we got the fish along side te boat, gaffed and tail-roped. We were back at the dock by 2:00!
